The shadow of the holy book

I just came form the screening of an interesting documentary about the relationship between a few big corporations and the dictator state Turkmenistan. The name of the documentary is “The shadow of the holy book” and is made by the finnish Arto Halonen.

The question which remains, for me personally is, if business an corporations are bad in their doing or is the government of this country even worse? Of course, you should not support a dictatory country and discart your ethical values just for the money… But hey, who is not doing it in their individual decission making. You try to make the best decission for your carreer, you try to make the best deal for buying stuff and do not worry about the fact, who made them and what is behind.

Also try to keep in mind, if you are not sure about human rights in your own coutry, try to check sometimes the homepage or amnesty international. You do not know about the staus of the world, try to learn more on the homepage of the worldwatch organisation. Also try to learn at least something about the stuff you buy!

Also I would like to keep in mind, that there are more countries, which are not that democratic… Should the big companies not make deals with the German, Japanese, Russian or American government? Sometimes there are just some sort of democratic dictatorship. Just on a different extend. Big corporations are also much more like a country itself and its employees are sometimes just like ambassadors of countries. So eventhough you do not agree with everything your foreign minister says, you may have helped him to come to power. Just democratic. But how to influence big corporations to change their way of action? Maybe like the water does with stone. Shape it in small steps, but continously. ;-)
